Esther David
If we are to promote our rich cultural heritage, we can best preserve both the tangible and intangible cultural heritage in writing. Esther David has recorded two aspects of her own roots in her books – her life in the old city of Ahmedabad and her own origins as a Bene Israel Jew. In the Book of Rachel, the protoganist keeps her links with her Jewish roots through the synagogue in her village and the preparation of traditional Bene Israel Jewish food. This book featuring the recipes of the Bene Israel in Maharashtra and Gujarat is the Winner of the Sahitya Akademi Award 2010. She has written extensively about Ahmedabad’s culture and food too.
